MSL Mail Slots ?
Hello All,
I am new to the Librabries - the MSL series, and I am going through few documents about it.
In one of the document, "MSLxxxx User and service guide", I have read about the mail slots, however, was unable to understand it. Hence request you to kindly share me the below details:
1. What is a mail slot in MSL ?
2. Why is it used - What is its purpose ?
Cheers
Scorzzz

Re: MSL Mail Slots ?
MSL 5000/6000, 2024/4048/8096?
However, "mailslot" in this case means, you can only pull a part of a magazine to exchange tapes, after closing the slot, the library will only scan the mailslots, not the whole library.
Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Re: MSL Mail Slots ?
As I've always understood it, a mail slot allows you to insert / remove one tape to / from the library without having to pull the whole magazine out first...
Not really used mail slots in actual backup scenarios so I might be wrong...

Re: MSL Mail Slots ?
From MSL2024 User Guide:
Configuring the mailslot (Configuration > Configure Mailslot)
The mailslot is a single slot at the front of the left magazine that you can access without removing the
whole magazine. Loading a tape through the mailslot is faster than opening the magazine because
the device does not need to inventory the rest of the magazine slots when you use the mailslot . Also,
the device can continue to function when the mailslot is open. Access to this feature requires the
administr ator password.
...
It's more or less the same for all libraries, the count of slots may vary.
Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.
