MSL2024/SAS discovery problems in RHEL 6.5 system

Hi:

We have discovery problems with HP StoreEver MSL 2024/SAS robotic library in RHEL 6.5 Linux operating system.

  • Our hardware provider connected MSL2024/SAS to a HP H221 PCIe 3.0 SAS (HP H221 PCIe 3.0 SAS) with  a HP SAS Min-Min 1x-2 m cable ( only 1 SAS Min-Min connected for the physical installation).
  • Our MSL2024/SAS has 2 Drivers -SAS-> HP StoreEver MSL LTO-6 Ultrium 6250 SAS- C0H27A.

We installed RHEL 6.5 x86_64 operating system:

# uname -a

Linux 2.6.32-431.el6.x86_64 #1 SMP Sun Nov 10 22:19:54 EST 2013 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

# cat /etc/redhat-release

Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server release 6.5 (Santiago)

  • The OS discovered only 2 Drives LTO6, it didn’t show medium changer/picker of tape Library MSL2024 and HP H221 PCIe 3.0 SAS controller didin't detect too.

In RHEL system this is the command line output of the discovered SCSI devices:

# cat /proc/scsi/scsi

Attached devices:

Host: scsi0 Channel: 03 Id: 00 Lun: 00

Vendor: HP       Model: P420             Rev: 6.00

Type:   RAID                             ANSI SCSI revision: 05

Host: scsi0 Channel: 00 Id: 00 Lun: 00

Vendor: HP       Model: LOGICAL VOLUME   Rev: 6.00

Type:   Direct-Access                   ANSI SCSI revision: 05

Host: scsi1 Channel: 00 Id: 00 Lun: 00

Vendor: HP       Model: Ultrium 6-SCSI   Rev: 352W

Type:   Sequential-Access               ANSI SCSI revision: 06

Host: scsi2 Channel: 00 Id: 00 Lun: 00

Vendor: hp       Model: DVDRAM GTA0N     Rev: WB00

Type:   CD-ROM                           ANSI SCSI revision: 00

Host: scsi2 Channel: 01 Id: 00 Lun: 00

Vendor: HP       Model: B120i           Rev: 4.10

Type:   RAID                            ANSI SCSI revision: 05

Host: scsi3 Channel: 00 Id: 00 Lun: 00

Vendor: TOSHIBA Model: TransMemory     Rev: 1.00

Type:   Direct-Access                   ANSI SCSI revision: 02

  • With HP L&TT we have the same results/output: SCSI rescans results:

Main >
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Type the corresponding number to select a device, or enter a blank command for a command list

Libraries/Autoloaders:

Processors/Enclosures:
   1 HP B120i (Address: 21.0.0[2-/dev/sg4])
   2 HP P420 (Address: 3.0.0[0-/dev/sg0])

Drives:
   3 HP Ultrium 6-SCSI (Address: 10.0.0[1-/dev/sg2])

Other Devices:
4 HP LOGICAL VOLUME (Address: 0.0.0[0-/dev/sg1])
   5 TOSHIBA TransMemory (Address: 30.0.0[3-/dev/sg5])

Any advice/idea to correctly discover MSL2024/SAS in RHEL 6.5 system?

We are not completely sure where the problem is:

  • In RHEL 6.5: Is it necessary to update the HP driver’s controller P420 SAS interface? This has been done.
  • In RHEL kernel parameters: CONFIG_SCSI_MULTI_LUN-> in 2.6.32-431.el6.x86_64 Kernels, is it necessary to change or activate these kernel parameters?

We  also tried to manually add medium changer:

# echo "scsi add-single-device 1 0 0 1" > /proc/scsi/scsi

# cat /proc/scsi/scsi-> same results than above

  • Do we need two HP sas min-min 1x 2m cables plugged into both drivers (at the same time) for a correct OS SCSI scan and OS load?

Thank you in advance for your suggestions and support.

Re: MSL2024/SAS discovery problems in RHEL 6.5 system

Looks like the H221 is not shown at all? Where is the controller installed? What server model?

Hope this helps!

Torsten.
