Msl2024 Tape library/Drive Error
I am getting two errors during backups, They appear to be causing drives to be unavailable to Veeam? Can anyone decode these errors messages" Especially the Second One? Failure/Infomational?
First i get This...
23.08.13 10:32:59.12 Attention: Drive Cleaning request
Event Code: 0x82 - cleaning request
Drive number: 0x01, 1
Followed by:
23.08.13 10:32:59.12 Attention: Drive Warn or Crit Tape Alert flag
Event Code: 0x84 - tape alert
Element number: 0x10, 16
Drive number: 0x01, 1
Tape Alert Flag: 0x15, 21
then Veeam Fails with:
[tapes01.bucoks.com] [TapeService] Failed to LoadTapeToDriveByScsi
Failed to call RPC function 'LoadMediumByScsi': [MT]SCSI PASS THROUGH DIRECT ended with Scsi Error Fixed format, current; Sense key: Not Ready. vendor specific ASC= 0x00000000000000f8, ASCQ=0x0000000000000094.
[MT]SCSI PASS THROUGH DIRECT ended with Scsi Error Fixed format, current; Sense key: Not Ready. vendor specific ASC= 0x00000000000000f8, ASCQ=0x0000000000000094
This seams to happen when Veeam tries to Load a new Tape to continue a backup on the next tape. Veeam is not forcing drive cleaning, it is set to let the library determine and clean.

Re: Msl2024 Tape library/Drive Error
We are not sure if Veeam has the option to enable/request cleaning of the device.
Recommendation will be to have a non-expired cleaning media. If the Drive needs cleaning. It will automatically scan the slots for the cleaning media and use it. We need to make sure an unexpired cleaning media is present when needed.
If the drive is cleaned already. Then it could be a faulty RW Head which requires drive replacement. Also, we recommend to use HPE RW Media for trouble free performance.
Hope this helps.

Re: Msl2024 Tape library/Drive Error
THe library is set to auto-clean for the time being, Veeam suggests we change that to let it Manage Cleaning, This solution is just 1 Year old, all the media is HPE (clening tapes and RW tapes.), the cleaning Media has been used 26 TImes. I read that they are good for 50. what is the best way to determine if the media is expired? Interestingly these messages coincide with a Drive Cleaning Event. where the Library reported that the Drive Cleaning was successful. But then stopped communicationg with the Veeam job that wanted to continue its backup on that drive.
My original question was about the errors, are they Just informational (Just letting me know that the drive needs cleaning) or are these Critical Errors.
I am working a case with HPE on this. but i still dont have an answer of the nature of the messages.

Re: Msl2024 Tape library/Drive Error
As long as the cleaning media is used when needed. Then these messages are informational and can be ignored. The tape usage count and expiry info will be saved on Cartridge memory. So the unusable/expired state will be reported by the drive logs.
"Interestingly these messages coincide with a Drive Cleaning Event. where the Library reported that the Drive Cleaning was successful. But then stopped communicationg with the Veeam job that wanted to continue its backup on that drive."
This could be a possible faulty drive. If these errors come back on after replacing the drives. Then we need to check the media health as LTO RW heads are very sesitive and can fail if the media is damaged.
