MSL2024 - Upgrade Kit?

Hi guys,

We are currently specifying a new backup system from top to bottom and I have settled on the following:

DL360 G5 1x E5335 QuadCore, 2GB RAM
2x 36GB SAS 15krpm for OS
2x 74GB SAS 15krpm for NetBackup 6.5
HP SC11Xe SCSI HBA PCI-E 4x
HP MSL2024 Library Ultrium 960 LTO3 (AG115A)

My supplier has also indicated that I will need an Upgrade Kit, AG327A.

What is the purpose of the Upgrade Kit? Would I need one if I changed to the Ultrium 920 version of the Library?

Any comments on the system welcome.

Cheers
Dave

Re: MSL2024 - Upgrade Kit?

You dont need that upgrade kit HP MSL2024/4048/8096 LTO-3 Ultrium 960 SCSI Drive Upgrade Kit AG327A. You already have a HP MLS2024 1 LTO-3 Ultrium 960 SCSI Drive Library AG115A. The part your supplier is offering to you its the tape drive you already have inside of the library and there is no more space to put another in unless they are Ultrium 920.

No need for upgrade kit.

Re: MSL2024 - Upgrade Kit?

Hi,

Thanks for the clarification.

If I was to purchase the MSL2024 Library Ultrium 920 LTO3 AH169A, would I need an Upgrade Kit for that, or do you only need the Upgrade Kit if you are installing an Additional Drive?

Re: MSL2024 - Upgrade Kit?

You are right If you have a MSL2024 with ultrium 920 you can have 2 tape drives because the tape drive is half height. Ultrium 960 is Full height.

960 = 160 MB/s
920 = 120 MB/s

Re: MSL2024 - Upgrade Kit?

Thanks Pablo, so I would only need the Upgrade Kit for fitting an extra drive in the future, and not for the initial install?

Re: MSL2024 - Upgrade Kit?

The MSL2024 with 1 LTO3 Ultium 920 has 1 empty slot because the tape drive is halfheight. You can start performing backups with the MSL2024 because it already has 1 tape drive. As you say you would only need the Upgrade Kit for fitting an extra drive in the future, and not for the initial install.

Re: MSL2024 - Upgrade Kit?

Hi,

May I know if the MSL2024 can accept 2 x Ultirum 1760 SCSI drives?

I've referred to the EBS matrix (ftp://ftp.compaq.com/pub/products/storageworks/techdoc/tapestorage/SW_MSL_Tape_Auto_bc_FINAL.hires_040808.pdf)and it only states Ultrium 1760 SAS drives. SCSI version is not inside.

But the Quick Specs of MSL2024 says that it supports the SCSI version. So I'm not sure.

Yes the MSL2024 can have 2 Ultrium 1760 (half height)but only 1 Ultrium 1840 (full height) you should have started a new post.

Re: MSL2024 - Upgrade Kit?

I have something to ask if I'am alowed:

Why if I have a MSL2024 with two Ultrium 920, the backup server only uses one, the first ?.

I think it should be able to use both drives at the same time and perform 2 jobs simultaneously. Am I wrong ?
