MSL6000 library tape drive upgrade not visible to servers

After upgrading to LTO-4 drives in my MSL6000 tape library, the ioscan still displays the old tape drive LTO-3 information even though the index map has been recreated and all unix servers remapped. I would like not to do a reboot to fix this. What am I missing?

For new drives at same address you need new device files. Remove and recreate them at the server.

why is
rmsf -H ...
insf -e
ioscan -f

not recreating the tape device files?

Can I avoid a reboot?
