Not able to restore tapes

I use a DDS-4 tape drive (modell 5683a) to back-up my PC's, but now I'm not able to restore any tape anymore. The error message is not of any help (unknown error), cleaning the drive is also not a solution. Sometimes, when I repeat the restore action I can restore some files. Tapes are new. OS is Win 2000, I tested with several software.
StorageWorks also reports errors, but without any helpfull solutions.
Please help me to solve this problem

What application was used to create the backup tapes?

I used BackupExec version 8, but also tried it with NT backup.
