SCSI Termination not found

replacing a tape drive on Win 2000 server....old was Dat 8, 50 pin connector, replacement is Dat40, 68 pin...Adaptec AHA 2940U/240UW HBA....when the new drive is connected, "SCSI Termination Not Found" and "SCSI Bios Not Found" messages appear at boot.....Windows hangs during loading. ID for HBA is 7, ID for Dat 40 is 3....everything seems to be as it should, but I cannot get it to work....any thoughts? Thanks

Re: SCSI Termination not found

If the drive is internal, you need a terminated cable. If external, you need a terminator on the drive

Re: SCSI Termination not found

I guess I should have elaborated.
The cable is terminated (cable supplied with drive), and the HBA has Automatic Termination enabled. I tried setting the HBA termination to Enabled, with Hi/Lo both on, but it did not work

Re: SCSI Termination not found

Alan:

HP DAT8 devices are Ultra SCSI devices, and use a single ended narrow signalling model.

HP DAT40 devices are Ultra2 SCSI devices and use a Wide, LVD signalling model

Do you have any other devices on the SCSI chain?

Easy solution is to get a Wide (Ultra2) card. Make sure you have a 2940UW or later card for the new drive.

p.s., The message "SCSI Bios Not Found" can safely be ignored is only tape devices are on the SCSI chain.

Here is a document that may help:

Re: SCSI Termination not found

There are no other drives on the SCSI bus....only the Dat 40. The card is an AHA-2940UW....I ran the serial number at Adaptec's site to verify. THe old drive was also connected to the same HBA...communication and connectivity were fine, but the read/write cycle failed using L&TT. I figured the drive (about 5 years old, I think) was fried. I am soooooooooo lost! p.s.-thanks for the link, but I had already been there...several times, trying to figure it out!

Re: SCSI Termination not found

Hmm... Have you tried a new cable?

Re: SCSI Termination not found

no...haven't tried a new cable...the cable I am trying to use is brand new, which came with the new drive. The problem could be with the cable, I suppose, but I think it unlikely....then again, nothing else has worked, huh?

Re: SCSI Termination not found

Some additional information:
in the HBA's bios, the following settings are present:

Initiate Sync Negotiations-Yes
Max. Sync Transfer Rate-40 MB
Enable disconnection-Yes
Initiate Wide Negotiation-Yes

(I think I'm starting to lose hair over this)

Re: SCSI Termination not found

EUREKA!!!!!!!!!!!
Found the culprit.....HBA was bad!
Replaced with Adaptec 21960, now works flawlessly.
John and Lewis, thanks for trying to help....it is appreciated.
Keep up the good work.
