StorageWorks Dat 160 SCSII tape drive - Novell 6.5

We have installed the internal tape drive and when rebooting machine the tape drive is correctly detected by the scsii controller.

The backup software finds no backup devices and when I look at the status of the drive with Novell Remote Manager the drive shows as not active with a red diagnoal line across it. I am given the option to activate the drive and then receive a message

Error activating device (Please check media). MM_ERROR(7)

Any ideas how to resolve.
