Ultrium 1760 SAS Not Recognized by Windows Server 2008

I am running Windows Server 2008 64bit and have an Ultrium 1760 SAS Internal that is not recognized in the device manager. It is correctly installed, and the "ready" light iluminates on the front of the device. I have updated all drivers, and it still will not show up. Any thoughts?

Device manager has no entry under "Tape Drives"?

To which controller are you attaching the card?

That is correct - The Device Manager has no entry for Tape Drives. The drive is connected directly into the motherboard, as it is a SAS connection.

Which server?    The SAS ports on some servers may not have all the intelligence it takes to support a tape drive.

Details of supported servers and controllers can be found at http://www.hp.com/go/connect -- I'll save you a few clicks, you'll get eventually to http://www.hp.com/products1/storage/compatibility/tapebackup/ISS/13-0003-0002.html#matrixtable    From there, find the tape drive and the server and click on the check mark at the intersection.   A way down on the page you'll find the recommended controllers.   In some cases, you can use the embedded SmartArray controller, for instance, but not all SmartArray controllers supported tape.

It is an HP Proliant ML350 G6.

Re: Ultrium 1760 SAS Not Recognized by Windows Server 2008

The compatibility chart says this --

"The HP ProLiant ML350 G6 does not have a suitable integrated controller available for connecting the HP StorageWorks Ultrium 1760 SAS . Please use one of the following compatible adapters:

462828-B21 - HP Smart Array P212 Controller  HP RECOMMENDED

462860-B21 - HP Smart Array P410 Controller (Internal Only)

462830-B21 - HP Smart Array P411 Controller (External only)

"

So it looks like you can use one of the SmartArray controllers above, but not any internal SAS ports.  You could also use a SAS controller specified in the Ultrium 1760 drive Quickspec document.
