Ultrium 4 drive is very slow

Hi all,

I just add an Ultrium 4 drive on ESL322E Tape Library. It connects to our RP5470 (HPUX 11.23 as Netbackup media server) through SAN Switch HPSW ESL712 (8/24).

The drive can be recognized by the system and I put the drive in Netbackup configuration. Everything looked fine until I run the backup, it was very slow only 400 KBps (other drives can reach 14 MBPS). To eliminate the possibilities of Netbackup problem, I also test with the tar command direct to the drive, it also very slow until it failed.

I have brought up this to the HP and send the TL log, they can not find anything wrong with the library and tape drive

This tape drive is newly add, we already connected to two Ultrium 4 drives with same configuration and they are running fine.

Anyone knows what could be the problem?

Thank you,

Iwan Tamimi

Re: Ultrium 4 drive is very slow

I don't know about your configuration, but assuming you already access the other tape drives via a single 2Gb HBA in your server, you surely have a problem with bandwidth.

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: Ultrium 4 drive is very slow

the usual suggestion is to start a device performance test with LTT
this test will check the data path from the host to the drive, and validate it
also a support ticket can collect info from the drive that may explain the reason why it fails

Re: Ultrium 4 drive is very slow

I agree, get LTT from

http://www.hp.com/support/tapetools

and pull a support ticket.

You can also do this from command view tl.

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: Ultrium 4 drive is very slow

Hi All,

Thanks for all of the responses.

Actually this new drive on the same system we already have 2 other tape drives exactly with the same configuration, and they are running fine. So the bandwidth should not be a problem. I think even it has the bandwidth problem, it should not be that slow. There is something wrong.

For the new drive we reuse the hba that was connected to LTO2 with with 4 GB switch. We replaced the drive this LTO4 drive connected to 8 GB switch. Is is possible there is speed negotiation problem? How do I check?

Logon to the switch and check the port status.

Hope this helps!

Re: Ultrium 4 drive is very slow

Hi All,

Torsten you are right the problem is in the switch somehow the port also belongs to several other port, I don't know much about the SAN switch but after we just simply move to other port and re-zone again, the tape drive working as expected.

Thank you all.
