Drive performance / related to % of space left?

Drive performance / related to % of space left?

 a couple of My drives that are on Virtual servers ran past 90% before new drives were introduced; historically when drives hit 80-90% performance starts to take a downturn. Is there a performance limitation on the SAN (HP lefthand P4300) as a whole for max we should hit before expanding?  Since the servers are just files; is the historic thought process in regards to consumption of space still valid?
