Only guest traffic flows through the controller. All other traffic is distributed. so in theory the number of clients an AP can handle.

Only L3 roaming and guest traffic depends on the controller.

The current implementation is not ideal, but not really an issue because the APs can run autonomous if they lose connection with the controller. Only guest access and L3 roaming is not available. Make sure in this case that 802.1x authentication is provided by the AP and not the controller.

HP promised to have a solution to provide also real redundancy for L3 roaming and guest acces. So in fact an always available controller.

Depends how you discover. There is a sequence how the AP discovers. But maybe you can provision the AP upfront to getter faster access to a controller, discovery sequence will be skipped.
