VLAN accross switches - Logical 1st Steps Example

Hey everyone,

Nothing too fancy here...but can someone lead me into allowing VLANs to work between switches?

I have a 6600ml-24g fiber switch and (2) 5406zl switches.  The old admin just created 2 VLANs and assigned ports as "Untagged Ports" to allow grouping.  I don't think this is right though it does segment traffic.

We'll forget about the fiber switch for now...to keep it easy.

Let say the following is how it's set up.

This example has 2 switches.  Each 5406zl switch has RJ-45 modules in slots A-B-C with 24 ports each.

module A = VLAN 100

module B = VLAN 200

module C = VLAN 300

There's a 4th module with NO VLAN info entered on any of the 24 ports.

This is in module "D" on both switches.

I run a cable between port D1 on both switches.

How now to I enable VLAN 100 on both swithces to talk to each other?

Mark it as Tagged on D1 on both switches.

I'm a bit confused as the last admin made 3 VLANs.

Hopefully you can help a little bit more as I share the VLAN info now.

Default - VLAN ID 1

BC - VLAN ID 10

Test - VLAN ID 777

The default VLAN has NO static or tagged ports...members of the VLAN are simply "Untagged."

The BC VLAN has say 10 ports in it...say C1 through C10,  These ports are listed in the BC VLAN, but they are set as "Untagged Port."

So for the example.  Lets say both switches have ports C1 - C10 in the BC VLAN and they are set to "Untagged."  Member nodes that are physically plugged into these ports have no problem talking to eachother.

We're still using port D1 as the trunk port...so all I have to do to allow the VLAN members to talk to each other across the (2) switches is:

1) Modify the BC VLAN and set port D1 on both switches to "Tagged"

and that will carry the C1 - C10 traffic between the 2 switches for the BC VLAN?
