Not necessarily. The Boot ROM version seldom changes (it doesn't change often) and it's updated when it is really needed (in any case the Comware 7 IPE file contains the Boot ROM so - once you follow upgrade instructions on relevant Release Notes - the Switch takes care of evaluating and updating it before proceeding with the System ROM update, this is going to happen within the update process).
There isn't a particular path to follow when updating. It could be from any version to any newer version. Clearly you should read and understand about particular restrictions, tips and (software/hardware) feature updates the newer versions are carring to be prepared if anything looks unsual after the update.
Just for reference (far from being complete):
- HPE Comware Software version 7.1.045 Release 3110 uses Boot Rom version 142.
- HPE Comware Software version 7.1.045 Release 3111 Patch 02 uses Boot Rom version 142 (so no change if compared to R3110).
- HPE Comware Software version 7.1.045 Release 3116 Patch 05 uses Boot Rom version 147 (Boot Rom updated within the R31 software branch).
- HPE Comware Software Version 7.1.045 Release 3207 uses Boot Rom version 145 (Boot Rom is 145 on the R32 software branch).
- HPE Comware Software version 7.1.045 Release 3208 Patch 15 uses Boot Rom version 147 (Boot Rom updated within the R32 software branch).
- HPE Comware Software version 7.1.045 Release 3506 Patch 02 uses Boot Rom version 147 (so no change if compared to R3208 Patch 15, latest of R32 software branch).
I have to admit that, technically speaking, the Boot ROM version 147 used on R32 or R35 couldn't be equivalent to the 147 used on latest R3116 Patch 05...but I believe it should...there is no reason to have a concurrent numbering that reset on each software branch (in other terms the Boot ROM versioning - 142, 145, 147, ... - is just one despite the software branch Rxx considered).
IMHO you should not focus on that too much and let the switch to understand if Boot ROM requires an update or not.
An interesting thread would be this one too.
