11iv3 - Adding alternate links to existing volumegroup (using legacy dsfs)

I have a volumegroup to where I want to add th legacy alternae links to it.

i  used....

vgextend /dev/vgxx  /dev/cyt1d0      (primary is cxt1d0)

If fails saying

verfication of unique LVM disk id on each disk in the volume group /dev/vgxx failed.

Following are the sets of disks having identical LVM disk id

/dev/dsk/cxt1do  /dev/dsk/cyt1d0

I assume you set originally set up the VG up using legacy dsf's?

You can check the following to see if legacy multipathing is enabled (by default it is).

# scsimgr get_attr -a leg_mpath_enable

Also, perhaps you can post vgdisplay -v and ioscan -fnk

Did it really say that? That looks like an oooh, not a zero.

leg_mpath_enable says... current=true and default=true

Attached is the vgdisplay

Re: 11iv3 - Adding alternate links to existing volumegroup (using legacy dsfs)

Try running # vgchange -a y /dev/vgxx and see if you get an errors with any existing volumes.

You can use # ioscan -m dsf to confirm that the legacy paths refer to the same device.  For example:

/dev/rdisk/disk17        /dev/rdsk/c11t0d0
                                   /dev/rdsk/c9t0d0
/dev/rdisk/disk18        /dev/rdsk/c11t0d1
                                   /dev/rdsk/c9t0d1
/dev/rdisk/disk19        /dev/rdsk/c11t0d2
                                   /dev/rdsk/c9t0d2

Also by doing a bit of searching myself I noted a few comments regarding EMC LUN behavior for HP-UX 11.31. Here is a good example if this applies:

http://h30499.www3.hp.com/t5/LVM-and-VxVM/Can-t-add-alternate-path-to-VG-on-11-31/m-p/5192457/highlight/true#M47369

Re: 11iv3 - Adding alternate links to existing volumegroup (using legacy dsfs)

heres somes info..

I ran    ioscan -m dsf on one of my 11iv3 servers. Heres a sample of it output

/dev/rdisk/disk100            /dev/rdsk/c8t5d0

                                             /dev/rdsk/c10t5d0

(notice the 2 legacy devices to the 1 agile)

This server has legacy alternate links when I view any VG on it.. (this was our first 11iv3 server)

On the server im are having an issue with..here is a sample of its ioscan -m dsf

/dev/rdisk/disk200            /dev/rdsk/c8t1d0

/dev/rdisk/disk230            /dev/rdisk/c10t1d0

Knowing that the 2 legacies above point to the same disk (EMC syminq)

Why is a new agile assigned to   the the second  (alternate) legacy?

Re: 11iv3 - Adding alternate links to existing volumegroup (using legacy dsfs)

If you havent, refer to the link I posted above.  This seems to be quite related.

A copy of the post that resolved the issue on that post:

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Go speak to youe EMC support guys and ask them if they have the SPC-3 bit set on the FA ports on the Symmetrix that talk to the 11iv3 host.

IIRC if the SPC-3 bit isn't set, then an EMC SYmmetrix will generate a different WWID for each path to the same LUN, which causes HP-UX11iv3 to see each path as a different device.

This is *different* from the FA settings for 11iv2/11iv1, so your storage guys might not have realised.

Re: 11iv3 - Adding alternate links to existing volumegroup (using legacy dsfs)

Thanks for the help. I contacted EMC and they stated the same. Its the SPC-2 bit to support 11iv3..
