Cannot login to the new machine 11.31 due to the non trusted system

Hi,

I copy the /etc/passwd, /etc/group, /home, and /tcb from our development machine (HPUX 11.00) to the new RX machine (HPUX 11.31) but cannot login..

It show login incorrect whenever I try to login.



Any idea? Is it because the existing is trusted system but the new machine is not. So how do I set it?

The answer to your last question is yes.

For your file transfer to work and allow logins either both systems need to be trusted or not.

If you tsconvert (command see man page) your new system and then restore the /tcb the users should work properly.

I'd be careful about doing a migration that way. You may be inadvertently deleting some of the default accounts that have been added to the system since 11.00. Also, the format of some of the /tcb files is not the same in 11.31 as it was in 11.00. (nearly a 10 year span!)

Compare the files in /usr/skel between 11.00 and 11.31 and you should be able to easily see some of these differences in default accounts.

Try running authck -a on the new system to see what issues it can identify. That's a good way to identify many inconsistencies that would otherwise cause you very obscure problems. It's not a guarantee, but it's a good place to start.

Also, if you use auditing, realize that the format of the audit files has changed over time.

The syslog files might contain hints of what errors are being encountered during login.
That would be one of the first places I would look.

Hi Steven,

After I migrated all the file, i used sam to convert the trust system on new rx machine(11.31). After convert, i can't login. Is it due to the new login password cannot support more than 8 character for trusted system. How to go to the single user mode to change the password? How to make a duplicate copy for etc/passwrd?
