How to know the dns service status in Linux

Depends on your distro. Check if bind is running if you have one. Name resolution can be checked with nslookup and/or dig.

locally you could do a lookup or check if port 53 is opened.

address lookup
# dig @localhost www.google.com

port lookup
# netstat -tnpl |grep 53
