Hi:

"Recommended" - no, not in my opinion unless you are placing the tables in backup mode so that a static image exists during the backup.

In fact, 'fbackup' calculates a checksum for every file it is going to backup just before the file in question is going to be written to its archive.  When the file has been copied, another checksum is computed, this time from the archive copy.  If the checksums differ, as they would for actively changing files, then 'fbackup' marks the copy on the archive as bad and repeats the checksum-copy-checksum-compare cycle again.   This cycle is repeated up to 'maxretries' times which has a default value of five (see the 'fbackup' manpages).  If the 'maxretries' is exhausted, there will be no good copy of the file in the archive and any subsequent attempt to recover it (with 'frecover') will fail.

You should be aware, too, that while most veterans of HP-UX consider 'fbackup'/'frecover' to be one of HP's finest tools, it is deprecated in 11.31 and the official word is that it will not be made available in subsequent releases to create new backups.

In all, your question, Is it recommended" can be answered by saying, "no, but you can do it if you like".

Regards!

Re: Fbackup Limitation

I agree with JRF, in case of database backup due to online backup/dynamic data like Oracle DB , data protector seems more suitable ,if you can afford it OR already have it.
