The search engine on this ITRC site is not working very well, to put it lightly. Or bluntly saying it: It is broken to no repair. The new and improved site is said to have a better search engine but today, your best bet is putting a search quesry like the one below to google:

hpux your search terms here site:itrc.hp.com

it will still return a few stray threads from other forums but the ratio and relevance will be much better.

Just my 2 cents

With my weak psychic powers, I have no idea
what you were searching for, or on which Web
page, or with which options selected or
specified, or what you found when you did it.
I tried a search for "vms" in "HP-UX" forums,
and got mostly HP-UX stuff.

It's not unusual for people to post questions
in inappropriate forums. For example:

http://forums.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/questionanswer.do?threadId=1479642

Adding "hp-ux" to the keywords being sought
might help some.

You used Forums advanced search?
What exact keywords did you use?

Re: how to search for those only hpux related threads?

For instance, under IT Resource Center Forums > HP-UX > System Administration, in "Search" field where is located on the top of the page, I type "server upgrade", it will list all threads based on various platform, it has threads about OPENVMS, about VAX..etc. I am hoping it should list those only on HP-UX platform.

or do i have to type "server upgrade hp-ux" instead?

Ah. I believe that the only limit for a
search like that is your choice between
"IT Resource Center (Forums)" and "All of HP
(US)". For more control, you probably want
to follow the nearby "Forums advanced search"
link to the "advanced search - forums" page,
where there's a pull-down menu (initially
"all categories") which has an "HP-UX"
option. (There are more finely divided
categories, but selecting the right OS is
usually good enough for me.)

I tried an "advanced search" for
server upgrade
with "HP-UX" selected in the category menu,
and got stuff with minimal VMS content.

Re: how to search for those only hpux related threads?

Steven,

thanks for your input, and I got what I need.

However, it really should not be working like this, because I have already choose IT Resource Center Forums > HP-UX > system administration, so it should search keywords only in HP-UX category.

It seems it doesn't work like that way. I think it worked before, but all the sudden it stopped working.

It may _look_ as if it would work that way,
but I don't think that it ever did work that
way. Just make it a habit always to go to
the "Forums advanced search" page, and you
will live a happier life. (Until the ITRC is
replaced by some new thing, with its new
problems.)

Although it seems that the HP-UX category would limit the search, I don't believe it has ever worked that way. I gave up on the HP search engine 10 years ago when Google became much more accurate. True, Google does not have a way to directly search just the HP-UX category. I believe the reason is that the category is not externally qualified. That is, all the Forum entries are in one bucket, so when I search with Goggle, I preface my search with hp-ux.

The Forums search engine will never be fixed. Most of the maintainers have moved on and the complex environment is too unwieldy to fix. However the good news is that the entire search engine is being replaced in about 3 weeks by a high performance system from Lithium. The migration of 100% of Forums content is occurring now and may be available to preview at HP Discover next week.

There are a number of charter members of the Forums team that are actively working (and funded) to create a much better information exchange system. The look and feel will change and evolve over the next few months but it will be a better tool. Collaboration, formatting and search engine improvements are significant and with help from the community, it will be much better than it is now.

So for now, let Google do the searching like this:

site: itrc.hp.com hp-ux server upgrade
