long hostname feature not working in NIS on 11.31.

Hi,

After going through the 11.31 OS load I picked a 10 char hostname and after the OS load was done

`hostname` cmd shows all 10 chars

`nslookup` / DNS work fine

however `uname -n` truncates the nodename to 8 chars ??

Is there something that I need to do to make this not happen

when I also go and turn on the NIS client on this system running 11.31 right after this it assumes my 'nodename' is 8 chars (not good)

thx for any help

Re: long hostname feature not working in NIS on 11.31.

Hi,

Its not recommended to have long hostnames. But still check this.

Re: long hostname feature not working in NIS on 11.31.

Hostname & nodenames are two different things
What are looking for , uanme -n is "nodename" not hostname.

Hostname wont show as shown in uname -n

for 11.31 should.
goofy# kctune -v expanded_node_host_names
Tunable expanded_node_host_names
Description Enables expanded node and host names (read manpage for warnings)
Module sysconfig

Do read this thread.

Hope this helps.

Well as you haven't told us what you _have_ done it's difficult to say. I wonder if you have set the kernel parameter expanded_node_host_names to 1?

Anyway, what you should really do is read the following white paper throughly to understand the implications of what you are doing:

Re: long hostname feature not working in NIS on 11.31.

Thanks for all the posts.

The issue was that when I turned on the NIS client functionality in HP-UX 11.31 after doing a cold install (with a 10 char hostname ) NIS failed to pick up all 10 characters. RPC/NIS must be one of those affected interfaces as well that is using the 'nodename' however NIS/RPC doesn't appear to be mentioned in any of the documents.

I still have no clue whether or not the kctune fix for long hostnames would have worked for NIS or not.

reverting to 8 char hostname via set_parms
