Re: LVM Maintenance mode and Single User mode

In single user mode vg00 is activated, in LVM maintenance mode it isn't.

Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Re: LVM Maintenance mode and Single User mode

Hi,

Adding to the outstanding difference mentioned by Torsten. In lvm maintenance you do tasks like resizing /stand, primary swap and in previous releases recreating LVM data structures when your disk is not bootable {now not required because of the LVM enhancement boot resiliency}.

In single user mode, critical administrative tasks like fsck are done where you want the fileystem in a "quiescent condition". Single user mode is also at times used for recovery of the root password. Torsten's answer is pretty much the "outstanding" difference. This is an input as to when you should use lvm maintenance mode and when single user mode.

Re: LVM Maintenance mode and Single User mode

When entering LVM Maintenance Mode none of the VG's will be active. This allows you to work on VG00.
When entering Single User Mode, you do have VG00 active, but with nothing other than / and /stand mounted.
To boot in maintenance mode on a system with a root disk configured with LVM, use the -lm
option to the boot loader. On an HP 9000 server, enter the following command:

ISL> hpux -lm

On an HP Integrity server, enter the following command:

HPUX> boot -lm
