Need to find out why Redhat Linux server got hanged

Hi,

One of my Redhat Linux machine got hanged twice and I was not able to ping the server and it was not responding on the console as well. Finally I rebooted the server and now it is up.

I would like to find out the reason why it went down. Can you pleas tell me where and which log files I need to check to find out the reason.

Thanks
Gaby

Re: Need to find out why Redhat Linux server got hanged

When it hangs in this way, is difficult to identify the problem, because normally it can't be logged.

Check dmesg and /var/log/messages.

Also, prepare for future occurences enabling the magic sysrq and kdump/netdump.

Cheers.

Re: Need to find out why Redhat Linux server got hanged

HI Gaby

its not easy to find out root cause for such issues,

any new hardware / applications installed recently for this Redhat Server?

check the logs if can get any info,
work around can check the file system size, is there any file system is full?

what are the crontab entry, modify or remove any unusall entry and monitor for few days.
