oracle 12 on redhat

Hello experts,
I am running an Oracle 8.1.7.3 and 10.7 oracle application on the N4000 server running 11i. The idea is to upgrade Oracle and application to 12i on a box running redhat enterprise 5.

Question 1: What kind of system (hardware) do I need? My database is about 400GB. There are about 450 users and 80-100 users connects at peak time.

Question 2: Is it possible to migrate the database and application from the N4000 server to this Linux machine? if so, what are the steps?

I am trying to do feasibility study to dertemine if it can be done.

Any opinion is greatly appreciated. Thank you very much for your help.

Re: oracle 12 on redhat

Shalom,

On hardware you should consult Oracle. I'd go for big and bad and powerful. Like a DL580 maxed out with CPU's and logs of memory.

Migration: Oracle metalink, http://metalink.oracle.com has specific database migration procedures platform to platform. You need a support contract to pull this off, but it CAN be done.

Hi Nguyen

>>Question 1:

Based upon requests, processing capacity, storage performance etc. you need to figure out the assesment first. HP has many kind of solutions (server, storage).
What do you think about Itanium?

>>Question 2:

The way provided by SEP is perfect. You should go to the Oracle metalink or Oracle site for the migration.

Re: oracle 12 on redhat

Ashan,

Thank you for your input.

There are too many choices for system that run Redhat. I am not sure what system is the best based on performance. Do you know if there is some kind benchmarking test that I should take a look?

Thanks,

Re: oracle 12 on redhat

Tuan,

Do you or your organization planning on Oracle RAC and standby environment? Of course, I would recommend the Integrity servers, such as RX6600 platform - However, depending on your budget or licensing structure with Oracle, you'd get a better deal if you're running dual-core processors technology.

We are currently, running a pair of RX6600 servers with Oracle RAC, and ASM - The 3rd server is the same configuration with lesser memory for our Standby server. Our DB is about 1.2TB in size and we have two other environments (Test, and Dev), but without the Standby.

Again, I am just a hardware guy and know nothing about Oracle, but I worked closely with the DBAs, which I thought I would share this info.

Re: oracle 12 on redhat

Jorge,

Thank you for sharing the information. Our current oracle implementation is standby environment. The production is running on N4000 server and the standby is running on rp4440 server.

As you know, the PA-RISC chip has reached an end of its road map. With that being said, my choices would be the Proliant, integrity, or even the Dell PowerEgde...

I am still poking around and read about all these benchmarks and hopefully come up with the recommendation.

Again, thank you very much. I really appreciate it.

Re: oracle 12 on redhat

I've been around mostly HP servers, such as GS160, ES40, ES45, RX4640, Proliant, and RX6600 - We still have about 60 Dell PowerEdge departmental servers laying around. I would have to say, I like the new integrity servers the most. However, the new RX6600 platform uses the SAS drives architecture instead of the SCSI - Quite expensive when replacing / or add new drives. Overall, we're very happy with the decision.

Do let us know your decision when made.
