We are running a Service Guard Cluster with two nodes on RHEL 5.1
We are now trying to upgrade to RHEL 5.3.
What we did:
- Uninstalling the hp_qla2x00src rpm
- restored the /boot/initrd
- upgraded to 5.3
- installed HP Proliant Support Pack 8.25
After that we get now messages about duplicate PVs.
Found duplicate PV ......: using /dev/sdg1 not /dev/sda1
Looks like something is needed here to get the two HBAs working as failover with the native qla2x00 driver which should be used now.
Thanks for every hint.
Greetings,
Matthias

Re: RHEL 5.3 upgrade -> Found duplicate PV
The suport Matrix for PSP 8.25 does not list RHEL 5.3. That is the source of your problem.
You need an updated version of PSP that supports that kernel.

Re: RHEL 5.3 upgrade -> Found duplicate PV
Where can we find these matrix?
I thougt 8.25 is the latest PSP.
Is there a PSP that supports RHEL 5.3?
Thank you very much in advance.

Matthias

I do not believe there is a PSP that supports RHEL 5.3 CentOS 5.3
I believe you will need to wait for the next version.
Click fast, this stuff is a moving target.
I searched for a DL380 server, you may need to start over and drill again, but I do not believe this stuff is hardware specific.

Re: RHEL 5.3 upgrade -> Found duplicate PV
I can not find any hint, that the PSP 8.25 does not support RHEL5.3.
But I found that in the Release Notes of the PSP:
Enhancement Note:
Added support for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 Update 3 (x86)
Therefore, I do not really believe that it is not supported.
Sorry.
But on the other hand, I found nothing about that it is supported.
Confused!
Greatings,
Matthias

Re: RHEL 5.3 upgrade -> Found duplicate PV
--------------------------------------
While not all components support all errata kernels, the
PSP has been tested on the following distributions and errata kernels
for this release.
Distribution *Erratas
============================== ==================================
Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4
(32-bit) 2.6.9-11 (Update 1) through 2.6.9-78.EL (Update 7)
(64-bit) 2.6.9-11 (Update 1) through 2.6.9-78.EL (Update 7)
Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5
(32-bit) 2.6.18-8.el5 (Base) through 2.6.18-128.el5 (Update 3)
(64-bit) 2.6.18-8.el5 (Base) through 2.6.18-128.el5 (Update 3)
-----------------------------------------
I don't know how anyone (including HP) could maintain the position that RHEL 5.3 x86_64 is not supported. I don't suppose there's an authoritative source for this information?

SolutionYou may have to re-think about moving to RHEL 5.3;
1. RHEL 5.3 is supported with native HBA Qlogic driver
2. The only failover software for RHEL 5.3 is Device Mapper
While you were running RHEL 5.1 with Qlogic, you may be using Qlogic failover for HA.
Now that you updated the OS, the Qlogic failover cannot be used with RHEL 5.3
This is causing your duplicate PV issue, without the failover software the OS is seeing the OS disk more than once.
This link has info on how-to move from Qlogic failover to Device Mapper.

Hope this helps.

Re: RHEL 5.3 upgrade -> Found duplicate PV
Thank you for that very important hint.
I tried to install that Device Mapper Migration kit you mentioned, but I am jammed at:
** Installation of HPDM Multipath tools **
#multipath-tools kit is not installed on your system
Enter the Location of HPDM Multipath bits("!" [To exit]) :
I do not know what is meant by "HPDM Multipath bits".
I downloaded the HPDMmultipath-4.3.0.tar.gz, unpacked it and tried to enter all possible things of that tool into the question above.
Unfortunately, I do not know what they want from me.
The other strange thing is:
# rpm -qa |grep multipath
device-mapper-multipath-0.4.7-23.el5
It looks like there is already a mulitpath tool installed.
Hope you can help me with this things.
Thank you in advance.
Greetings
Matthias

Re: RHEL 5.3 upgrade -> Found duplicate PV
Few things to clear up.
PSP has a 64 bit version that supports 64 bit Linux.
PSP 8.25 seems to have come out at the same time as or just after 5.3. There is a support matrix that is part of the installation package.
Multipathing is built into the OS. There is no need to install PSP to take advantage of multipathing features.
There is a need I have found with RHEL 5 to install qlogic drivers to access shared storage. I never needed to do this with RHEL 4.x
PSP is very frustrating because the download location is a moving target and the documentation is not located in http://docs.hp.com . That is where I'd look for the matrix and you won't find it there.
Also, some of the PSP scripts mis-detect CentOS as not being RHEL, even though it is 100% binary compatible.
Fun. Fun. Fun. "Kef" (Transliterated Hebrew)

Re: RHEL 5.3 upgrade -> Found duplicate PV
Now that you have updated the OS to RHEL 5.3, you may the following method.
1. Modify modprobe.conf as per the device mapper guide
2. rebuild the ramdisk
3. Install HP device mapper
4. turn multipath service on
5. reboot
Are you booting from SAN?
Hope this helps.
