Re: suggestion for Linux admins to excel in HP-UX administration

The "Interex Enterprise Solutions" magazine, in it's Jan/Feb 2000 issue, had an article titled "Linux in an HP World" which was aimed at HP-UX familiar admins who now need to deal with Linux. It helped bridge the gap in the HP to Linux direction and might be of help in the other direction - if you can find the article. If you're an Interex member, you could try searching their web site ( http://www.interex.org/home.html ) or you could check with friends and colleagues to see if anyone has that old issue.

Hi,
A parallel for commands between most common unix flavors:
http://www.unixguide.net/unixguide.shtml

I would go after to docs.hp.com to look at the administration manuals (At the time HPUX 9 , I learned most with just the 2 manuals the other valuable manual was called: How HP-UX works: Concept for the System Administrator )

All the best

Re: suggestion for Linux admins to excel in HP-UX administration

Hi,
two good books for learning and/or mastering HP-UX are (i prefere the second) :
1) The HP-UX 11.x System Administration Handbook and Toolkit (2nd Edition) - http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0130125148/qid=1102850145/sr=1-8/ref=sr_1_8/102-5464717-3142560?v=glance&s=books
2) HP Certified: HP-UX System Administration
- http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0130183741/qid=1102850145/sr=1-7/ref=sr_1_7/102-5464717-3142560?v=glance&s=books

and, of course, The ITRC forum !!
Welcome to the (marvellous) hp-ux world !

Olivier.
They say "install windows 2k, xp or better", so i install unix !

Re: suggestion for Linux admins to excel in HP-UX administration

Rule Number 1) Do not be tempted to replace root's /sbin/sh with bash. /sbin/sh is a statically linked shell that will operate without any shared libraries. This is importantr when you are in signle-user mode and not all the filesystems have been mounted yet.

If it ain't broke, I can fix that.

To really learn, you need a system to administer.

It can be a workstation or a low end server, but the way to really learn the OS is to install it, use it, get it to do real things.

The book HP Certified is a good reference for admins whether or not they have any interest in taking the test.

Eventually rubber needs to meet the road, hands need to touch the keyboard.

I learned HP-UX first and then learned Linux. Its fun. Obviously you can see an itrc forums search can give you a lot of good information.
