vgdisplay hangs

I am running Red Hat Version 5.5, and when I do a vgdisplay -v, it just hangs, as does any vg command I try..

Any ideas where to look to try and resolve, short of rebooting the server ???

Re: vgdisplay hangs

Try running vgscan with extreme verbosity:

vgscan -vvvv

It should print out at least some messages before hanging. Those messages might offer clues about the nature of the problem.

Also look into "dmesg" output: are there any messages that would indicate problems with disks?

What kind of storage do you have? Local disks only, or do you have a SAN? Are the disk controller/HBA firmwares up to date?

Re: vgdisplay hangs

Thanks, using vgscan -vvv showed it was stopping with Clustering issue..

Found that lvm.conf had locking_type coded with 3 for Clustering, changed it to a 1 and vgscan worked.... along with others...
