vx_nospace - /dev/root file system full

root file system became full while I am doing the fbackup. It seems I have used a wrong device name /dev/rmt/3m instead /dev/rmt/2m while doing the backup. How can I fix this. Thanks for all your help.

Just kill the backup and remove /dev/rmt/3m.

typo...I meant

Can I safely remove the /dev/rmt/3m file? Instead of creating a space situation in root file system, WHY HP-UX is not smart enough to give an error message on 3m instead?

Sure, you'll need to restart the backup.

Because that's a valid file, though a common mistake. There is no advanced AI technology to determine you made a typo and it shouldn't create a regular file in /dev/.

Thanks for your reply. I am experience same challenge now. I have removed the UPS device manually but still cannot access the server. I still get the message " msgcnt 112 vxfs: mesg 001: vx_nospace - /dev/root file system full (1 block ext)

you need available space to login to the server. You will have to reboot in single user mode so you can cleanup the filesystem.

You  have to reboot the server and go in to single user mode.

run fsck for /usr LV and mount /usr for rm command to work.

free up the space and move to init 3.
