domains & trusts

Hi,
This is the situation:
1 domain that is currently online. Win2K DC running DNS-veritas backup-dhcp-mailserver. Range 192.168.206.x/24
They bought new company, nextdoor. We start from scratch, with new domain. WinSBS2003 DC running DHCP-DNS aswell.
They want veritas backup from site 1 to backup all data from 1 & 2. A networkcable between 2 buildings is possible, already there, not connected. (30m length).
I can put trust between domains, but afraid clients from site1 will get ip from server site 2 and visa versa.
What is the best sollution to interconnect 2 sites so server 1 2K can backup data from server 2 sbs?
(thought about 2nd nic in both servers and make seperate network between them?)

Thanks for the advice !

Regards;

Re: domains & trusts

Hi Frank,
First of all, I thought SBS does not support a trusts to other domains, but I'm not sure.

Guess this changes your situation if that is so,

Re: domains & trusts

To avoid the forward of bootp request (DHCP requests), you may install a router between the networks. And yes, Windows SBS does not support trusts, otherwise, if you don't register the DHCP in the domain, it won't serve addresses.

Re: domains & trusts

Hi again,
Maybe a second NIC in the SBS server with a static IP and DNS in the range as the W2K network will work, the cable between the two networks should run from that NIC to a switch in the W2K network.

I do not have much experience with Viritas, but may the backup program can access the server by that IP (with an user from the SBS domain ofcourse)

I never done such a thing, but maybe someone can finetune this idea,

Have a nice day,
Regards, Ronald

Re: domains & trusts

Just thinking outside the box... Could you setup 2 vlans so the pcs don't see each other and put 2 nics in the servers. Put one nic on Vlan1 that will go to the pcs and the other nic on Vlan2 that will go server-server. The Vlans are set inside the switches on the ports. I guess you could always run fiber between the buildings and do fiber channel cards but that would be costly.

Re: domains & trusts

that is indeed a good idea.
Should I define the VLANs on the switches on both sides?
