Ugrading Firmware on HSG80 from 8.6 to 8.7

I'm in the porcess of upgraing my SAN to W2K3 and have been informed that the HSG80 controllers need to upgrade from 8.6 to 8.7 version of firmware to work. I have been told by others that this is not a simple flash upgrade but rather card replacement. Can anyone verify the process and provide more detail on what is involved with this upgrade?

Thanks
Dean

Dean:

Here's one link (if you require it):

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/DriverDownload.jsp?locale=en_US&pnameOID=430159&taskId=135&prodTypeId=12169&prodSeriesId=327117〈=en&cc=us&swEnvOID=1005

Here's a link that implies 8.7 will not support WIN2K3:

Try calling 1.800.282.6672 re: Version 8.8 and WIN2K3 support. Apparently, V8.8 release is imminent.

Other ideas:

do a google search on HSG80 and search www.hp.com for HSG80.

Sorry I wasn't more helpful. BTW, the 'card replacement' probably involves PCMCIA (PC card) cards. Apparently, that is how the software is distributed. See: ftp://ftp.compaq.com/pub/products/storageworks/techdoc/acs/EK-G80MS-SA-B01.pdf

Re: Ugrading Firmware on HSG80 from 8.6 to 8.7

Thanks Roger.

I have been to these web sites and I have search google. I do know of someone that is running W2K3 on 8.7-7 firmware, so I know that it will work. My question is more on the line of the process of the upgrade. I've never upgraded the firmware on these controllers before, but I have upgraded firmware on many other hard ware components. Usually this involves running a b program that allows one to flash the bios with the code. I guess since these are not connected to a computer in the traditional way, that a PCMCIA card is inserted into the controller and this is how the flash is updated?

Thanks

Dean
the upgrade is made replacing the PCMCIA containing the firmware with a new one.

Regarding W2K3 support, isn't one of the supported operating systems appearing on the MA8000 webpage, but if you read the release notes of the Solution Kit for HSG you can read "Windows Server 2003 is compatible with ACS V8.7-1 or higher" (ftp://ftp.compaq.com/pub/products/storageworks/techdoc/acs/AA-RH0QM-TE.pdf). I would open a call with HP to know if W2K3 is actually supported.

Hi Dean,

HP's SAN Design Guide states ACS 8.7 is supported under Win2003, but only in Multibus Failover mode.
As Richard says, you need to replace the PCMCIA card in each controller to upgrade your ACS. But that's just the storage system. You should also check that the other components in your SAN is at a supported level for W2K3, including:
- Host Bus Adapters (model, firmware and driver)
- HSG80 Platform Kit (8.7B required, free to download)
http://h18006.www1.hp.com/products/storageworks/acs/platformsolutionkits/index.html
- SecurePath (4.0C required, 4.0C SP1 recommended). SecurePath updates within a main revision (i.e. 4.x) are free. If you have SecurePath 3.x you will need to buy an upgrade.
http://h18006.www1.hp.com/products/sanworks/softwaredrivers/securepath/index.html
- SAN Switch Firwmare (depends on switch model)

Re: Ugrading Firmware on HSG80 from 8.6 to 8.7

Thanks all. I understand the other compenants and do plan to upgrade them. IT was the HSG80s that I had questions on. Iit appears that the firmware actually resides on a PCMCIA card and not actually upgraded from it.
