Unaccounted disk usage in Windows 2003 server
Hi
I have a Windows2003 server machine. It has a C drive with a 68GB capacity
The Disk management utility currently reports that it has only 10GB free space. This means that 58GB is used.
But the problem is that I could not account for all of the 58GB used.
I checked the directory space usage of the directories at the parent level. Example C:\Program files, C:\Windows ,C:\temp but they only add up to 10GB.. where did the rest go ??
Disk fragmentation reports that C:\ drive is highly fragmented. Does fragmentation consume more disk space??
Thanks!!

Re: Unaccounted disk usage in Windows 2003 server
Hi Kenny,
could be that some files are hidden, I do not know if your system shows hidden and system files, you can set this when you open My computer and go to folderoptions in the tools menu (view tab)
Futher thae swapfile is also locted on the C drive (by default) But this will not take 40GB diskspace. Mostly 1.5 until 3 times your amount of RAM if system and hidden files are on you should see that file in the root of the C
A fragmentated disk can consume a bit more then a non-fragmated disk, but this is not a very big difference. But I would sertenly defrag your C to boost performence.
regards,
Ronald

Re: Unaccounted disk usage in Windows 2003 server
Hi,
Most likely it is Shadow copies.
Check in "Shadow copy" tab in properties of Disk C
Or run in CMD:
"vssadmin list shadows" to check if shadows copy take space
