dhci wizard - esx host discovery failed

not sure if there is a dedicated dhci community/forums so please forgive me if this is the wrong location

we are runnig the dhci setup and getting stuck on esx host disocvery

i know the wizard is fussy about the network adapters and specifically the order - i have configured a static ip address on the first 10Gb NIC.

The Alletra and the servers are all connected by way of SN2010 switches. (M -Series)

error:

NOT A VALID SERVER :

REASON : CABLING IS INVALID FOR SERVER ; MIN 4 PHYSICAL NICS REQUIRED. FOUND

How many physical nics does your ESXi server have?  And how are they connected to the switches?

Re: dhci wizard - esx host discovery failed

12 physical nics

only the 4 x  10G nics are connected  to the switches. (2 per switch)  Connected by DAC cables.

Re: dhci wizard - esx host discovery failed

Team,

I have a couple of suggestions that might be helpful.

Expected vmnic and switch assignment.

  • Example

           vmnic0 + vmnic1 is on the same switch  E.g switch 1
           vmnic2 + vmnic3 is on the same switch E.g. switch 2

The deployment guide also has helpful information starting on page 9.  Look over the LLDP requirements that continue on Pg17.  Also on page 17 is a detailed diagram of cabling.

https://infosight.hpe.com/InfoSight/media/cms/active/public/pubs_HPE_Nimble_Storage_dHCI_Deployment_Guide_for_New_Installations_6_0_x.pdf

Also, make sure you haven't assigned IPs to vlans for testing. Stack setup only compares lldp returned managementAddress field, and is expecting them to match. When assigning an IP to the vlan that subnet could return a different mgmt address for the interface.

If you find that you are still hitting an error after validating the configuration from the deployment guide, please contact support and open a case.

Re: dhci wizard - esx host discovery failed

We are running 6.1.x is the guide basically the same as the one for 6.0.x?

LLDP requirements

Link Layer Discovery Protocol (LLDP) must be enabled on each switch. dHCI uses LLDP during deployment to verify your
environment.

I have enbaled LLDP on my SN2010's - is there any other configuration required?

vmnic's

Do they need to be numbered vmnic0-3 ?

i think some of the nics are shoiwng up as vmnic6-7 for example .

Re: dhci wizard - esx host discovery failed

Here is the deployment guide for 6.1.x and later.

https://infosight.hpe.com/InfoSight/media/cms/active/public/pubs_HPE_Alletra_dHCI_Deployment_Guide_for_New_Installations_on_Array_OS_6_1_x_and_Later_6_1_x.pdf

The example provided was an example of the first 4 10Gig+ interfaces discovered as connected on the hosts during deployment. They could be vmnics0-3 or vmnics4-7.

Solution

Re: dhci wizard - esx host discovery failed

turns out this has nothing to do with the esxi hosts or the array

the issue ended up being that the array was not added/registered to the customers HPE greenlake cloud.

Page 74 of the Deployment guide

Set Up dHCI for a New Environment

Before you begin

Set up your HPE Greenlake Cloud account and Data Services Cloud Console account. You perform basic array tasks from
Data Services Cloud Console. You manage dHCI from the dHCI dashboard, which is part of the VMware Web Client.
Information about setting up a cloud account for Data Services Cloud Console can be found in the Data Services Cloud
Console Getting Started Guide, which is available on the HPE InfoSight documentation portal
(https://infosight.hpe.com/resources/nimble/docs ) in the section Document Type > Getting Started
