Bios Serial Console Port

HI all.

I am a little confused about what BIOS Serial Console Port is. As far I can see, In the OneView the definition is "option to redirect video and keystrokes through the serial port to operating system boot". But I do not understand why would we use it. If we connect directly through the physical console serial port we should also have those option by default. Then we can set it: Auto or Physical Serial Port or Virtual Serial Port. That makes no sense for me. Can someone help explaining why would we use it ?

Thx.
