Installed FWSCSI disk into C110, yet disk size is zero.

Hello.
I had a 2 Gb drive in my C110 (ST32430WD), and I had an 18 Gb (ST19171WD) that I replaced it with.

When I try to boot to the new drive, I get the following output:
ENTRY_INIT
Status=-7

00800000 00000000 00000000 00000000 00000000 00000000 00000000 00000000
00000000 00000000 00000000 00000000 00000000 00000000 00000000 00000000
0000350B 00000012 C1000040 02800400 070600DB 00000000 000IF004 00000000

Failed to initialize.

When I boot w/an install CD, I get the following text:
Scanning system for IO devices...
Disk at 8/12.5.0 (SEAGATE_ST19171W) reported a size of zero

Firmware is: 1.2 3529

I am sure the drive is good. Do I need a different drive, or a firmware upgrade?

Thanks.

normally a size of 0 indicates a hardware problem. Drive is not responding correctly, not connected correctly, or its on its way to disk heaven.

Re: Installed FWSCSI disk into C110, yet disk size is zero.

You need an OS on the drive to boot off of it.

If you can boot off the old disk.

ioscan -fnC disk

See if your disk even shows up.

Take appropriate action based on the report.

Do you have an Ignite backup to restore boot disk from? Old boot disk? Might help.

Re: Installed FWSCSI disk into C110, yet disk size is zero.

The "-7" status means ..
1) Booting from the wrong path or non-existent device.
2) Trying to boot from a device that is not responding.
I would suspect drive is bad.

The ignite/install message that the disk size is zero led me to believe that the error was either a bad disk, or the firmware would not accept an 18Gb disk.

I'm inclined to agree with your assessment that you may need a different disk. I don't think C110's ever had 18GB drives in them. I'll see if I can document that for you.

Re: Installed FWSCSI disk into C110, yet disk size is zero.

I see largest disk for C100/110 is 9GB. One more thing you already figured out that PDC is very critical to firmware. Usually, if you want to boot from the disk, this disk should be HP disk with HP firmware. After workstation booted into hpux, it loads 'universal' driver and it can work with disks having non-HP firmware. So the answer for you should be to leave 2GB disk as bootable and try to install this new 18GB as a second, data disk

Re: Installed FWSCSI disk into C110, yet disk size is zero.

Thought the disk was good, it was not. Tried another disk (still Seagate ST19171W) and it worked. Course it is only an 8.5Gb disk (ignore first number in Seagate names).

Will award points!

So apparently the drive was not only too big, it was bad as well! Glad you got it straightened out.
