move LVM/SAN from HPUX 11.11 to HPUX 11.31

Hi.

Does anyone know that it is possible to move LVM from HPUX 11.11 to HPUX 11.31 by using vgexport/vgimport ?
If so, what do I have to pay attention to ?

Just want to give more details about the problem:

I have 2 vgs from hpux pa-risc 11iv1. Those vgs using SAN disks. And I want to move the vgs as well as the disks to a new box running hpux ia64 11iv3.
All SAN disks are of course zoned to both servers.
Is this possible ?

There is no problem doing this and the process is the same as it would be for moving disks between 2 systems that were both on 11.11 (i.e. a vgexport/vgimport operation)

The only thing to watch for is that the VxFS Disk Layout Version (DLV) for the filesystems on the 11.11 is supported on the 11.31 system by the version of VxFS deployed there (it usually is, but you should check it anyway). Run an "fstyp -v /dev/vgXX/rlvolX" to check the version.

I ran the fstyp -v on both server and it show :
vxfs version 4 on 11iv1 box and
vxfs version 6 on 11iv3 box.

My vgexport/vgimport will also include both filesystem and raw devices for databases.

so on 11.31:

VxFS 4.1 Supports DLV4-6
VxFS 5.0 Supports DLV4-7

So you should be OK - the DLV of your 11.11 filesystems will be supported on 11.31 (unsurprisingly the reverse is _not_ true)

The vgexport/vgimport will certainly be OK for raw devices... of course you haven't indicated what will be reading those raw devices and whether you will have the same version of that software on the 11.31 system - you'll have to check all that with the database provider.

They're raw devices used by Sybase databases.

The vxvs on 11.31 is backwardly compatible. if you do a lot of sharing back and forth, you will run into issues with fsck being needed to fix filesystems.

But if this is a one way move there will be no problem.

You will need to make sure the sybase user on both systems has the same numeric user id in /etc/passwd to avoid access issues with sybase.
