Solutionhttp://www.docs.hp.com/en/B2355-90997/index.html
Appendix C of the manual talks about boot helper systems and when they are required.

Re: question about the HPUX

Not accurate. When you are cold-installing a new server, the processor has no concept of a network (there is no HP-UX, no networking drivers) so the computer simply polls the local network to see if an Ignite server is supplying an image. To go between subnets, the concept of a router is needed. So a boothelper is needed, either as a bootable tape (such as an Ignite tape), a bootable CD or DVD, or another machine on the same subnet which can provide a basic networking kernel. Once the basic kernel is in RAM, Ignite servers on other networks can be used.

Re: question about the HPUX
Yes it is true. However, bootsys is a program that runs on HP-UX. So it is only useful if you already have a running system that you want to replace. Here' the detail: http://www.docs.hp.com/en/B2355-90997/ch09s01.html You can also 'push' a network install from the Ignite server to a running system. Both scenarios require a running version of HP-UX.
The more common method for using Ignite images is to install HP-UX on a dead system (such as a replacement boot disk) where there is no working HP-UX.
