raw volume to ASM

my current scenario is
System: rp7420
OS:11.11
MCSG:11.16
Cluster file system:RAW
Oracle:9.0.6.0 with RAC

if i upgrade to 10gR2 and convert the existing RAW volumes to ASM what consideration need to be taken? regarding performance in light of OS and shared storage.

Please advice.

Re: raw volume to ASM

Well the first point I would make is that if you wish to use ASM, your would have to either:

i) Uograde the OS to 11iv2 or 11iv3 so you can use a newer version of Serviceguard which supports ASM over SLVM

-or-

ii) Stop using Serviceguard and use an all Oracle stack with Clusterware - you would then have to backup any SLVM partitions and restore onto completely raw disk for use with ASM.

This is because ASM is only supported with SLVM in versions 11.17 amd 11.18 of Serviceguard, which isn't available for 11iv1 (11.11)

Re: raw volume to ASM

hey

I suggest you too to switch to 11.31, oracle asm and clusterware. I think you have to create ASM diskgroups and move the content of the raw with rman to asm.

Re: raw volume to ASM

i don't want to upgrade my existing system.

I need is only what to do retaining the existing system.

Re: raw volume to ASM

ok, i understand so.

My existing MCSG environment has one package called X and LAN failover in every nodes.

My Plan:

Retain existing MCSG for package X failover and LAN failover.

For Oracle, i'll install 10gR2 with Clusterware and ASM.

Will MCSG provide any benefit to Oracle?

Will MCSG and Oracle Clusterware can coexist?

Re: raw volume to ASM

I though I explained that already - let me tray and make it more clear:

On HP-UX11.11 with Serviceguard 11.16:

- Serviceguard and Clusterware can co-exist as long as you are using raw SLVM volumes and *not* ASM

On HP-UX11.23/11.31 with Serviceguard 11.17/11.18:

- Serviceguard and Clusterware can co-exist as long as you are raw SLVM volumes, or using ASM over SLVM. ASM straight onto raw LUNs is not supported.

The point I'm trying to make is that if you want to use ASM in your RAC cluster you will *have* to upgrade your OS and Serviceguard version.

Re: raw volume to ASM

And just to be clear - if Serviceguard is installed it *must* be in control of Oracle RAC and Clusterware. You can't operate 2 clustering products on the same nodes independently of each other.

As to why to keep using Serviceguard with 10gR2, see my post here:

Re: raw volume to ASM

Duncan, i can understand your comments.

but the thing is we need to configure 10gR2, Clusterware and ASM for Oracle instance failover without MCSG.We will assign separate storage for ASM.

But I do also need the package failover and LAN failover. This will provide me MCSG.

I think u guess now the situation.

Sorry to bother you.
