I'm trying to clone (with make_sys_image & make_medialif) an older machine to a newer machine, and I get the above error. The old machine is L1000 and the new is a rp4440. I have read the previous threads, and it seems that I have to actually apply the latest HWE patch bundle to the old machine (L1000) and THEN rebuild with make_sys_image & make_medialif again. BUT, my question is, if You ALSO must upgrade the firmware and PDC stuff in addition to the HWE? In the previous threads, there are sometimes suggestions about this too, but it is not clear if it is really needed or not?

Re: set_machine_parameters_64: Unidentified cpu type returned from PDC_MODEL
You are better off, if you load the OS afresh in the rp4440. The CPU architecture is different and this can cause you many problems in make_sys_image .
There is no question of any firmware/PDC being upgraded, as rp4440 is a newer system.
With regards,
Mohan.

SolutionYou will need ti install the latest HWE + QP patch bundles.
If i'm not mistaken you are running 11.0 on your L1000.
HP-UX Hardware Enablement Patch Bundles
http://www.software.hp.com/portal/swdepot/displayProductInfo.do?productNumber=B3782HWE
HP-UX Quality Packs
http://www.software.hp.com/portal/swdepot/displayProductInfo.do?productNumber=QUALITYPACK
I would even install the latest Diagnostic and Support Tools for the HP 9000
http://www.software.hp.com/portal/swdepot/displayProductInfo.do?productNumber=B6191AAE
The L1000 firmware could also be affected if you install the HWE bundle, I would take no risk.

Hope this helps,

Re: set_machine_parameters_64: Unidentified cpu type returned from PDC_MODEL
Yes, that is what I meant. Install the HP-UX 11iv1 or v2(sept 04 or later) from the media. Note, rp4440 will not support HP-UX 11.00.
Hope this helps to clear the issue. read the below URL for the supported OS on rp4440.

Re: set_machine_parameters_64: Unidentified cpu type returned from PDC_MODEL
Can you share your conclusion in this thread so that it will be useful for others.
Were you able to clone the image from your L1000 to rp4440?
How did the installation of HWE and other patch bundles help you in achieve this?
Have you successfully loaded HP-UX 11.00 on rp4440?
With regards,
Mohan.
