Re: Can I use ignited tape from one model to different model

Hi,

I have successfully cloned RP8400 image onto RP7400s and vice versa. If you have the latest Ignite software, you should be able to clone the OS of one model from that of another model.

Look at the FAQs page of Ignite UX question "How does make_net_recovery differ from make_recovery?"

http://www.software.hp.com/products/IUX/faq.htm

However, you may have to check and install the drivers depending on the additional hardware you have on RP5470.

Can i use "make_tape_recovery" to cloning
to different model or I must use make_net_recovery to clone

You can use either. I used make_tape_recovery to clone between RP7400s and RP8400s.

Re: Can I use ignited tape from one model to different model

you can use either, but make_net_recovery is actually the preferred method, as well as being much faster. You can still clone from the tape. Have a read of the FAQ link provided by Sri for further information.

You simply boot from the tape (knowing the hardware address of the tape drive in advance is good, interrupt the boot at the 10 second message, have the tape loaded, run a "SEA" from the BCH menu. Use the hardware address from the search result to boot from the tape. i.e. bo p0
DOn't interact with ISL and the tape will load the install menu from the tape.

Make sure that the tape is cut like this:

# make_tape_recovery -x inc_entire=vg00 -I -v -a /dev/rmt/?mn (select your tape from your superdome and make sure you use the no-rewind device.)

Re: Can I use ignited tape from one model to different model

I've done rp5450 to rp5470. Thats a pretty basic one that I did in the HP performance center.

You see, itrc and hp said it could be done, but we wanted to make sure. So we contacted our sales rep and arranged to try it out. The justification from HP's standpoint was that if it worked they were going to move some hardware.

We're considering replacing a pair of rp5450 servers with an rp7420 server with two npar hardware partitions. We're going to test it, because we're considering doing this one with Ignite as well.

I reccomend arranging for a test in a performance center and testing a realistic configuration. If this is an excercize in theoretical thinking, the answer is probably, but the more different the hardware the less chance of success.

I know this is a done thread and this post isn't for points. I really want you to know that being told its possible and seeing that its possible are two different things.

Hi Mix,
I had do cloning from rp7400 to rp2450 without any problem. You need only to be sure that you put on the tape all important files on the current system, and to have same or bigger filesystems on the clone one (or the used disk space on the current one to be at least the same on the clone).

Re: Can I use ignited tape from one model to different model

I have personally recovered (and cleaned up from) just about every conceivable pairing of hardware, with the exception of the V-Class. The only thing that is absolutely not going to work is recovering a 64-bit recovery tape to a 32-bit system, and vice-versa. The more you seperate the OS from the applications and data, the better off you will be in recovery.

However, there are always the little gotchas (like differing drivers, that have to be installed post-recovery, or target installed into your image-able system before the tape is created). It works great if the system has every conceivable driver, but it makes for a really big kernel, and tends to slow down your boots and your system. Finding a system to test with first is paramount to a successful recovery.
