Re: Effort vs Efficiency

Steven Sim Kok Leong,

What would be more interesting is the number of replies each of has posted and how many points were assigned in the categories from N/A, 0-10, and no points awarded. The average, because a lot of people don't assign points is probably very close to 3, but more likely closer to 2.

Jeff Schussele,

I agree, if I make a mistake, get all over it, especially if it could lead to downtime/data loss. I have posted stopping someone from making a huge mistake, and I believe that its everyones responsibility to do so also.
If anyone has a disadvantage, its probably our aussie friends, yet they seem to do very well. My question is what is a 56K modem (being funny)? I haven't used a modem in years and I understand the pain. I started on a 300 baud modem on a teletype 33 (with the punch paper tape on the side). I've written many programs on punch cards, and yes most were COBOL, but some were PL/1 and Fortran. Man I aged myself, eh? Naw, I'm 41, but I got a quick start into Kompewters in '78. I should have stayed in the grocery business as a stock boy :-)))))))))

Re: Effort vs Efficiency

Hi Steven,

There is no harm in this if you have the time to spare. I personally like the point system not for status but for the feeling that you helped someone across the world to solve a real live and possibly real time problem. The only way I can tell if my reply helped is if they award points or a simple thank you and feedback(so as to help other people on how they solved the problem) will be very satisfying. But has it stands giving points is part of this forum and everyone should award points. Personally in the HP Openview forum for me anyway I am but in the shadow of the big names in the www.ovforum.org forum who have been using NNM and been in the Network Management area for donkeys of years, where there is no point system and its not as attractive as the HP forum. But HP move with the times that???s why we have the point system which is somewhat attractive because you get rewarded and it attracts us up and coming young ones as well. So please we shouldn???t make this point system complex we can only do extra stuff just for fun if you are a statistics freak.
I personally think feedback from the user is the way I can tell how good my reply was but alas not many of the users(in the Openview forum anyway) bother to give feedback detailing how the reply helped. But hey what the heck im learning and practising when answering questions.
Being from Europe(UK) myself or anyone across the Atlantic it don???t bother me as long as I can log on and participate in the forums.

regards,
gab
