11i Local Printing Not Working

I recently upgraded two B132 machines from HP/UX 10.20 to HP/UX 11i version Sept. 2001. CD's B3920-14052 & B3920-14053.

The upgrade was done via "Cold Install".

Since the upgrade the printers (Deskjets) on the Parallel port of each machine do not work. lpstat -t shows it "disabled". I can enable the printer however as soon as I try to print something it goes "disabled" again.

The device 8/16/0 appears the same as under 10.20 /dev/c1t0d0_lp major 216 minor 0x010002 owned by lp with the mode crw-r--r--. lssf says instance 1 mode 2. I can not even do an echo "test" >/dev/c1t0d0_lp . The write fails.

Out of desperation I reinstalled 10.20 and the printers do work. That says to me the printers can print. The parallel port on the B132 works. 11i dosen't work?

Is there a patch or something I'm missing running Sept 2001 11i on a B132. Pleanty of RAM 384MB, pleanty of disk 18.3GB. Firmware 4.1.

P.S. The CentIf is configured in the Kernel.

Have you ever tried using SAM to configure your printer on the 11i system?

In my opinion SAM does a good job in printer configuration.

That is what I used to setup the printers "SAM".

I am running lp-spooler and CDE with 11i.

If I run "shell" and do a simple 'ls | lp' it fails with lpstat -t reporting:

scheduler running
DESKJET accepting requests
printer DESKJET disabled
disabled by scheduler:can't open /dev/c1t0d0_lp

Keep in mind if I put the HP/UX 10.20 disk back in printing works OK. I think it has to do with 11i or a driver, just not sure what? If I stop the scheduler I can't even do an "echo TEST >/dev/c1t0d0_lp"!

Hi Ken,

Is your printer port seen in ioscan output and does it show the port as claimed. you can regenerate the device files if required using "insf -e".

I tried the insf -e. Rebooted. No luck. If I do an enable DESKJET ; lpstat -t The port shows idle. If I then do lpstat -t again it says "can't open /dev/c1t0d0_lp".

Remember this (printing) worked fine on HP/UX 10.20.

Included as an attachment is a copy of the ioscan.

Local printing problems with 11i.

OK, heres the latest test results.

Testbed is a B132L. Parallel port. Deskjet Printer. 384MB RAM. 18.3GB Disk. Firmware 4.1.
Using lp spooler.

Printing works OK with:

10.20
11.00

Printing does not work with:

11i June 2001
11i Sept 2001

Help! Reimaging the machine is very time comsuming.

Any ideas why 11i would be an issue, would be appreciated. I have to move away from 10.20 because it will become unsupported by HP in the near future to 11i and I must try out code written for HP/UX before upgrading servers, a D270 and a D330 to HP/UX 11i.
