/var if often violaitng, so in the vg00 4gb space is remaining, so planned to increase the /var by another 2gb, more logs are getting generated, so planned to increase the partition size.

please provide us the steps that i need to follow while increasing the space, whether it is advicable to increase the space bcoz only 4gb left in vg00.

OK, that was what you were asking.

For your second question, "is it advisable?", you would have to decide. Personally, I would say yes. The other vg00 file systems should not experience much growth and, unless you want to devote a lot of your time to cleaning out /var, it makes sense to utilize your extra space where it is needed.

whether i need to unmount /var before increasing, if so after lvextend i want to use extendfs or fsadm? for increaing /var.

Here's the relevant man page section:

Increase the size of a file system existing on a logical volume:

First, increase the size of the logical volume.

lvextend -L 400 /dev/vg06/lvol3

Unmount the file system.

umount /dev/vg06/lvol3

Extend the file system to occupy the entire (larger) logical volume.

extendfs /dev/vg06/rlvol3

Remount the file system.

mount /dev/vg06/lvol3 /mnt


When I read that, it tells me you have to unmount. Maybe it says something different when you read it.

- Do you have online JFS on the system.
If yes, you dont need to unmount the filesystem.

Check:
# swlist -l product | grep -i OnlineJfs





Following steps needed to extend the FS by another 2GB (2048MB):

1. Check if you have free space & equal free space on both disk:
# vgdisplay -v vg00 | grep -e 'Free PE' -e dsk | grep -v Alt

From above output looks 4.4GB free space available , so you can go ahead:


2. # lvextend -L 6648 /dev/vg00/lvol7 #[4600+2048 = 6648MB the new size will be. ]

3. # fsadm -b 6648M /var

4. # bdf /var #To check.
