I use this approach to provide schoolers cheap desktop environments. Linux Terminals are diskless and can be at 512MB of RAM and as long as it has a network card that supports LAN boot -- you're good to go.

My oldest client is a Pentium III based Compaq iPaq with 900Mhz cpu and 512MB RAM... and an on-board GMA950 graphics cip. It performs flawlessly
