problem installing RHEL3 Update 5 on nx6115

Hi,

I've been trying to install RHEL 3 Update 5 on an nx6115 notebook.

The install CD boots up fine and detects devices up to the hard drives. I think the screen blanks right where you would expect X to start up...

I believe the graphics card for this system is an integrated ATI Radeon Mobility X300.

Any help would be appreciated...

Shalom Saiful,

You need to know for certain what your video hardware is. Most ATI video is supported.

Most entry level HP notebooks are very frustrating to work with Linux and simply won't support it.

I would suggest a different distribution. RH 4 might have better hardware support. So might Ubuntu.

Re: problem installing RHEL3 Update 5 on nx6115

peace steven!

I did test FC5 and it was able to run the installer.

However, I am limited to RHEL 3 due to the EDA apps that I need to install on the system.

I did some tests and concluded that the system isn't hanging, it just can't display...

Happily I did manage to get the notebook to display properly by typing:
linux vga=771

I found the above tip at a ThinkBook wiki.. What actually does vga=771 mean?

How about upgrading to rhel3u7 instead, or try the beta of u8?

Hi Alan,

That's a good suggestion, but I will have to try it on some other installation as I need this one to be up..

Thanks again folks for your suggestions!
