Re: When will HP stop making PA RISC boxes
There is still some PA-RISC development going on. HP plans to release the PA8800 running a 1 GHz later this year and then in either 2004 or 2005 they will release the PA8900 running at 1.5 GHz, which, if I recall correctly, will be the last PA-RISC chip. They also said that they will build new PA-RISC servers through 2006 and support them through 2011. Support may be extended but 2011 is the current end-of-life for PA-RISC.

Re: When will HP stop making PA RISC boxes
I you need to go beyond that date, you can always do an expensive special agreement with HP. Or at least you can try.
The high end boxes are being rolled out Itanium in the months ahead. HP is running its benchmarks on Itanium boxes as well.
The bell has tolled.
To directly answer your question: HP will stop MAKING the boxes when customer demand dictates it. If there is strong demand, they'll keep making and selling them.
Because of their announcments and the fact that newer technology will be Itanium, that will put a crimp in demand and eventually dry it up.

Re: When will HP stop making PA RISC boxes
Another key issue here is ISV adoption of Itanium, currently HP are on 11i version 2.0 on the Itanium platform having just moved from v1.6 of 11i. Next year some time there will be 11i v3.0 - this will be a combined PA RISC & Itanium release of 11i - when this is released ISV will start to port in large numbers, I think they are holding back until 3.0 is released becuase they would have to recompile there apps 3 x times (1.6 to 2.0 & then to 3.0) - no customer is likely to deploy a mission critical application on an OS that will replace with a newer one in six months time - I think there waiting until we get to the stability of V3.0 of 11i.
Just my opinion having spoken to end users & ISV's..
Cheers
James

Re: When will HP stop making PA RISC boxes
Once they have boxes at all market levels using the IA chips then you will probably see them stop making PA-RISC boxes, but even after that, there will be support for many years after.
