HP P2000 G3 Dual controller iscsi Firmware update issue.

Hello, I have a HP P2000 G3 dual iSCSI controller unit and I have nothing but trouble trying to update the controllers firmware.

Numerous calls to HP support have finally left me with the only option of having to completely take all servers accessing it off-line and pulling one of the physical controllers out of the unit so I can try to install the firmware directly onto the only powered on unit. My G3 is only about 10 months old and the firmware on it is one of the earlier ones but I wanted to get a feeling from this community for those who have done this and did it work? I even had one HP tech tell me that trying to download the firmware directly to the controllers using the CLI could burn out the unit ? I did not get a good feeling about his knowledge of the product after that comment. The logs for my flash attempt yielded this "Controller version Mismatch!! Flash Status is 7". I have attached the logs from my unit and I did send them to HP. The call to have me physically remove a controllers was after sending the logs and speaking to 3 HP reps. FYI I did disable the option to enable partner firmware on this unit previously.

Has anyone ever had to do this? And results?

Thanks. Doug

Re: HP P2000 G3 Dual controller iscsi Firmware update issue.

Firmware updates on MSA2000/P2000 are complex topics ...

I already used almost all available methods (SMU, windows utility, FTP) and I like the FTP method most.

It is still written in the release notes.

This method is really fast.

What does the windows utility? It update sthe first controller using FTP, then it turns on PFU (no matter if you disabled PFU!) and updates the second via PFU - this can take up to an hour.

The nightmare begins if you search the web for the correct controller and disk firmware files! But once you have found them, I never had real problems.

You probably need version TS230P008.

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: HP P2000 G3 Dual controller iscsi Firmware update issue.

I just wanted to update this post with the results that a console FTP transfer of the latest firmware for my P2000 worked fine. I installed it on both controllers live while the system was up. The steps HP asked me to do such as remove one of the controllers then try applying the firmware using the app did not work.

Hopefully this helps others who may get stuck installing the firmware using the exe or through the SMU.

Re: HP P2000 G3 Dual controller iscsi Firmware update issue.

Is "Windows utility" is the same as "HP P2000 MSA Firmware Update Tool" , last version 1.0.1.0 from Jan, 2012? At least it choose automatically the right firmware for my device...

Re: HP P2000 G3 Dual controller iscsi Firmware update issue.

No, it is not the same.

The "Windows utility" is the firmware bundled together with an update utility for this exact version (1 file download), the "HP P2000 MSA Firmware Update Tool" is a (IMHO still kind of BETA - this means needs improvements) universal tool for doing the update on all kinds of P2000, but you need to get the appropriate firmware files (download within this tool).

Hope this helps!

Re: HP P2000 G3 Dual controller iscsi Firmware update issue.

OK. So, I tried to use this "firmware update tool" anyway, seems to be it uses the same "windows utility". The update process took about an hour, some strange errors appeared like:

"FTP >> Attempting to unmount MC partitions; attempt number 6
FTP >> STATUS: Error -- Unable to unmount all MC MTD partitions; CPLD code load failure.
The user name or password is not correct. To fix enter correct authentication for this IP Address in setup page"

The final result is that this "CPLD" component left unupdated on one controller, it updated later when I set "Partner Firmware Update is enabled" through web interface of P2000....
