This is a very strange behavior indeed.
Once thing this confirms is that its not a hardware problem. Option (3)
is ruled out.
I would recommend you to install the VMS83I_UPDATE-V0400 patch
(or onwards) which has the fix for this problem. This should solve the
problem you are facing.

Yes. Thats correct.
I would suggest you install the latest update patch which is
VMS83I_UPDATE-V1400. The dependency for this is VMS83I_PCSI-V0300.
