How does SIM work!

I trying to put together a document for my Security Officer and need to explain how the product works from strat to finish. CMS server sends out a broadcast ? On what ports? What are the least amount of protocals needed to run SIM? What is the least number of ports needed and which are required to be opened?
Just trying to make sure my facts are clear and precise to get to the next step! Going live Production.
