php and email problem

I'm trying to send email from my hp sa1100 by typing:

echo "test" | /bin/mail me@somedomain.com

It seems like it sends it but I never recieve my email, do I need to configure anything to get this working? No ports are blocked.

Also, I assume I don't have to do anything to my php environment to get mail working once the above is fixed but I can't send email from a php file either.
