hi,
Why is that numbers in excel appear to one end ( right) and text to the other end(left).

That is called "Justification" either right or left. Right justified text will line up towards the right of the cell. Left justified will line up at the left of the cell.
You can control this by right clicking on a cell (or row number to format an entire row, or column heading to format an entire column) and choosing the "Format Cells" option. Once you are there choose the "Alignment" tab. From here you can control the horizontal and vertical alignment of data in a cell.
I'd suggest you buy a book on MS Office Suite and go through it.

I've just been using the stuff for a while, Steven. No real magic or anything, just learned by using the stuff.
And I've never been afraid to try something to see what it does. If it messes up my spreadsheet or something, I'll just bring up the saved copy and start again.
