XT983 Stop 0x24 Error

I have an HP Pavillion XT983 Desktop computer with Windows XP Home Edition. One day I restarted the PC and received the following error message: Stop 0x00000024 - NTFS.SYS at the Windows XP logo screen. I searched for the error in Microsoft's Knowledge Base and they recommend running Chkdsk /f on the NTFS drive. However, I can't get the PC to boot. It will not boot in safe mode or any mode. I tried the last known good configuration...didn't work either. I then attempted to access the recovery console to run Chkdsk, I receive the exact same error message and the PC reboots. Next, I slaved the drive into another Windows XP system to run Chkdsk from there, but I reveive the same error message on that system as well and the PC restarts. I even ran a diagnostic on the 40 GB Samsung HDD (no errors detected). As a last resort I attempted a HP system recovery but I still get the same error message and the PC reboots.

I have exhausted all of my options on this one. Any help resolving this problem would be greatly appreciated.

a bugcheck in NTFS.SYS usally means the disk metadata is so wrong that windows can't handle it.

if you have a linux system nearby, attach it to that and run CFDISK -z /dev/hd? (where ? is the disk id letter), then write it out. this will blank the partition table (essentally erasing the disk) so you can use it again.

if their is stuff you REALLY must have, consider a professional data recovery service.

After several hours and numerous attempts to revive the XT983, I was finally successful. The Windows 2000 Pro boot disk method failed twice but was successful on the third attempt. I thank you all for lending me a hand on this one
